Application for Confirmed Membership

Mount Cross Lutheran Church

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Camarillo, California

Confirmed members are baptized persons who have made public affirmation of their baptism.

It shall be the privilege and duty of confirmed members of this congregation to:

·        Make regular use of the means of grace, both Word and sacraments;

·        Live a Christian life in accordance with the Word of God and the teachings of the Lutheran church; and

·        Support the work of this congregation and of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America through contributions of their time, abilities, and financial support as biblical stewards.[1]

During the service of Affirmation of Baptism you will be asked these important questions:

·        Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God?

Response: I renounce them.

·        Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God?

Response: I renounce them.

·        Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God?

Response: I renounce them.

·        Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism:

o       to live among God's faithful people,

o       to hear the word of God and share in the Lord's supper,

o       to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed,

o       to serve all people, following the example of Jesus,

o       and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth?

Response:  I do, and I ask God to help and guide me.

Confirmed members intend to live among God's faithful people.  All of the items that follow can only be accomplished by individuals who work at this with others – in the community we call the body of Christ.  The Latin word for body is corpore, which is where we get the English word corporation.  We are a legal entity within the state of California, and we want you to be a conscientious member of the corporation in the legal sense.

We also want you to be a conscientious member of the corporation in the spiritual sense.  To be a member of the body of Christ is to be a good steward or manager of what God has entrusted to your care.  It means giving thanks for God’s grace to you in Jesus Christ through the sharing of your gifts: your time, your abilities, and your financial support.  Confirmed members intend to give because they know they need to give.

Living among God’s faithful people also includes knowing that your spiritual health needs more than just weekly participation in worship.  Confirmed members intend to take part in a small group that is dedicated to nurturing faith, encouraging one another in their walk of faith and serving in church and community.

The commitment to live among God’s faithful people is to allow yourself to become more tightly knit together with the rest of the body of Christ in this place.  Confirmed members intend to take part in opportunities for fellowship and fun.

Confirmed members intend to hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s supper.  This refers to worship and learning.  Confirmed members intend to regularly take part in worship and receive Holy Communion.  Confirmed members also intend participate in adult learning opportunities so they can deepen their knowledge and appreciation in such areas as the Bible, the history, teachings and practices of the Christian church in general, the Lutheran church in particular, and contemporary issues with which Christians must wrestle.

Confirmed members intend to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed.  Confirmed members intend to live a Christian life in accordance with the Word of God and the teachings of the Lutheran church not just on Sunday when they are at church, but Monday through Saturday, too.  Participation in a small group can help a person discover the resources they need as they face this challenge.  We do not want you just to come to church, but to be the church.

Confirmed members intend to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth.  Confirmed members intend to take part in some form of service.  There are many opportunities currently available in our own church and throughout the community and world around us.  You may consult the Time & Talent Report to see the many opportunities for service that are available.
